Being Abhorsen did not mean he had to like his job. Sure, sending bad guys past the ninth gate seemed fun, but around here? Man, there were so many undead that he couldn’t even pause to flirt with the ladies. Not that any girl suited him, of course. After the Queen, his great-great-great-aunt, passed away, and Lirael of the Silver Hand passed, and her son, and his daughter, and her daughter, and her daughter passed through and beyond the ninth gate, he was stuck with it. And Mogget, that idiotic cat-spirit-thing who slept all day in the messenger bag he carried, adding to the weight of the book and the delicate bells and their bandolier. Plus that sword. The one that one of his great-great uncles made way back in the day. Man, that thing was heavy with Master signs. How he did it was a mystery, but so were all wall-makers. Too many signs in their heads. Makes his mouth and throat burn just thinking about it.
And that ancient tunic! He just had to upgrade it and cushion the bells (and conceal them), but still keep them handy. What he wouldn’t do to be born into another family, across the wall and deep into the south. But it was his duty, and he can’t change the fact that he’s both feared and respected by the people of the Old Kingdom. King Touchstone’s progeny have rebuilt beautifully, encircling every village with fast and deep-running aqueducts. The trades have prospered, and the people have grown… but so have those Charter-forsaken undead and those damn necromancers.
For each Charter, there is an undead. For each Lord, there are half-dozen necromancers. It was as if Kerrigor’s priests have upped their game. What he would do for a single peaceful day and not have to track down those stupid minions? Anything, really. Except turn into a true necromancer. That would suck.
Kerith, as what his mother named him, was very close to tracking one of them down. He always got bitter as he closed in on something.
“You idiot,” he whispered to himself, “focus.”
Of course, Abhorsen was always intent and focused.
He smiled. Outward appearances always lie.
