Prologue:
Jayfeather looked out across the lake. He knew he was dreaming, for in the real world, he was blind. From when he was a kit Starclan had blessed him with sight in dreams. Drinking in the view, he realized the reflections of the stars had begun to move. His paws rooted to the ground, the medicine cat could to nothing as the stars began to pour down from Silverpelt, the thick band of stars that stretched across the sky. Jayfeather stared in awe as the stars glittered in a myriad of colors as they assembled above the surface of the water into an elegant butterfly boasting a thousand colors in its wings.
Gracefully, it extended a forelimb to touch the surface of the water and upon the touch started to burn up in a cascade of bright flames. Smoke filled the atmosphere, blocking out the sky, and Jayfeather's awe turned to fear. His pelt bristled as he went to flee but his paws remained rooted to the spot and his eyes fixed on the scene in front of him. Ashes began to rain down around him, covering his pelt and the ground like snow and filling the air with an acrid tang.
Cutting through the smell a familiar scent filled his nostrils which he recognized as Firestar, the previous Clan leader. Still rooted to the spot, he strained his eyes around to catch a glance of his renowned flame-like pelt. He felt breath, hot on his ear as he heard Firestar whisper; "Ashes of the fire that saved the clan will save again."
A chill ran down Jayfeather's spine as Firestar's scent disappeared and the acrid smell of the ash began to fill his nostrils and lungs, choking him and smothering his fur. As he fought for breath, he caught a glimpse of two cats running in the direction of the twoleg place across the lake before his legs gave out under him and he let a wave of blackness rise up to engulf him.

Silverpaw woke to a sharp prod in her side. "Go away, I'll play later," she mewled, rolling away. The prod came again.
"Wake up, you lump of fur! We're going to be late for our first training session!" mewed her brother, Grumblepaw. "Lionblaze and Cloudtail are waiting!" he called as he ducked out of the apprentice's den.
Silverpaw's eyes flew open. She wasn't a kit in the nursery anymore, it was her first day of training! She jumped up, shaking scraps of moss out of her fur and charged out of the den to meet her brother who was waiting for her by the camp entrance.
"Took you long enough," muttered Grumblepaw, pushing his way through the bramble tunnel.
Silverpaw pushed through after him, the sharp thorns scratching satisfyingly down her back as she went. She was too excited to be bought down by her brother's usual bad mood. On the other side of he barrier sat Lionblaze and Cloudtail, two of the clan's most senior warriors. They stood as Silverpaw and Grumblepaw approached.
"Welcome, young apprentices. It's a fine day to start training." meowed Lionblaze.
"In future we expect you to be more punctual, we're loosing precious sunlight," meowed Cloudtail, staring hard at Silverpaw. She bowed her head in embarrassment.
"Sorry Cloudtail. It won't happen again." she mewed apologetically.
"Don't be too hard on her" meowed Lionblaze, "She had an exciting day yesterday." Silverpaw remembered the excitement of her apprentice ceremony the day before, where she was apprenticed to her mentor, Lionheart.
"Sorry doesn't catch the prey," snorted Cloudtail, bonding away toward the training hollow before anyone else could respond. The warriors kept up a fast pace through the territory, ducking through the undergrowth and bounding over fallen trees in a single leap. Silverpaw and Grumblepaw scrabbled through the undergrowth after them, struggling to keep up.
They reached the hollow, panting. The warriors were barely out of breath. Silverpaw felt a hot flush of embarrassment at how tired she was, and licked her chest a few times to cover up her heavy breaths.
Cloudtail looked at the apprentices. "Soon you will have the fitness to keep up." he meowed, "Now, today we are going to show you the territory and our borders"
-
The sun was sinking below the horizon as Silverpaw padded into camp behind her brother, Grumblepaw. She was exhausted after a thorough look around the territory and it's borders. She wrinkled her nose as she remembered the sharp smell of the ShadowClan border markers.
"ShadowClan's stench is going to stay in my nostrils for days!" she complained to her brother as they headed over to the fresh-kill pile. "I'm going to bring a mouse to Sandstorm and hopefully she can tell me how to get rid of that awful smell!" she meowed, plucking a plump mouse from the pile.
Grumblepaw looked up from the pile, his eyes gleaming with amusement. "Maybe that'll teach you to be a bit more careful about where you shove your nose!" he remarked, taking a magpie and the two apprentices trotted off toward the elder's den. 'The clan must be fed first' Lionblaze's words echoed in Silverpaw's head 'And as apprentices it's your job to make sure the elders are fed. Then you may eat.'
The first stars of silverpelt had begun to shine in the sky before the two apprentices had finished with the elders. As they left, Silverpaw felt the fur on her shoulders prickle as she sensed eyes following her. She turned her head to see the blind medicine cat, Jayfeather, watching her. Although she knew he couldn't see, she couldn't shake the eerie sense that Jayfeather saw more than just darkness in those clouded eyes.
Her thoughts were interrupted by a cuff on her ear. Grumblepaw stood in front of her, paw raised for another blow. "You're not asleep on your paws are you?" he asked, "Come on, lets grab some fresh-kill before Cloudtail eats it all; I'm starving!" As if in reply, Silverpaw's belly growled and they ran to the fresh-kill pile.
"Hey Ashpaw!" called Silverpaw, trotting over to the apprentice's den where her other brother was laid out, grooming his paws. "How was your first day of training?" She settled down beside him to tuck into a vole she had picked. Grumblepaw joined them on the other side of Ashpaw and started plucking feathers from his thrush.
"It was great!" Ashpaw replied between licks, "Poppyfrost took me to the training hollow and taught me how to sneak up on a mouse! We then went hunting, but I didn't catch anything." He trailed off, looking disappointed.
Silverpaw gave her brother a friendly nudge, "Don't worry! You'll get one eventually, No-one expects you to catch one on your first time. Lionblaze and Cloudtail took us on a tour of the territory, and you'll never believe the stench that comes off of Shadowclan cats..."
The three siblings finished their meal and exchanged stories, sharing tongues contentedly until the mood begun to rise. "I'm heading to my nest, Cloudtail wants to go hunting early tomorrow morning" announced Grumblepaw, getting up and stretching. "Good-night Ashpaw, Silverpaw." Ashpaw, who was already half-asleep, grunted in agreement and got up to follow his brother into the den.
"I'm going to stay out here for a little while, but I'll be in soon" Silverpaw called to her siblings. She sat up and curled her tail around her paws as she looked around camp. Suddenly, out of the corner of her eye she saw Jayfeather emerge from his den where the medicine cats, himself and Leafpool, lived. He navigated nimbly through the camp, hugging the wall of the quarry that encased their camp and scrabbled up onto highledge which lead into a small crack in the rock where their leader, Bramblestar, made his den. Silverpaw watched as the tip of his tail disappeared into the cleft before turning to head to her nest. She didn't fancy staying up to eavesdrop on what their medicine cat had to say to her leader.
