The first time I met him, I, too, was enchanted by cunning charm. I'm not sure if it was his voice or his expression that did me in. Both were gentle. Hypnotizing. It felt like I had come home, somehow. It's almost a little scary, how quickly I had fallen under his spell. I was no fighter - just a scholar who had come to Arcadia to write about it. There were a great many legends that existed about the place, but how much of the rumor mill is true is hard to say. People rarely lived to tell about their experiences, after all.
It was a choice, from what I could tell. The choice to come here and die. In my opinion, no amount of power and glory could be worth a person's life, but evidently, people believe otherwise.
How could it be true, after all? That the person who sits upon Arcadia's great throne could be considered the Emperor of Valhalla? Who would obey? It all seemed so foolish.

There is a place at the center of Valhalla - an imposing structure made of concrete and steel. They called it Arcadia, amongst other things. The Bastille. The Golgotha. The Necropolis. The Colosseum. The Panopticon. It was more of a death trap than anything, but you know human tendencies to glorify everything terrible. Lured by the promise of riches and glory, thousands make the arduous journey to the Maldeur Valley, only to find that they are not, in fact, as strong as they believed, and die like dogs under the fist of the ruthless tyrant who sits on its throne.
His name is Domina. Worshipped like a god within the confines of his city of the dead, people only see him as his public persona - a terrifyingly charismatic and ruthless individual. Perhaps that charisma is truly the core of Arcadia - the terrifying reality that with only a few words, you'd be so enraptured by him that you would walk into the den of a hungry lion, because it would please him. That he need only utter "die for me." and you would blissfully embrace death, because it would please him. It isn't certain whether people obey him out of fear, or simply because he had that sort of face and voice - one that could do no wrong. A whisper that was simultaneously the warm embrace of a mother, and the stern authority of a father.
His calm exterior, however, belies a deeply impatient individual with enough self-loathing to fill several lengthy autobiographies and still have words to spare. He's not a psychopath or a sociopath, as most would believe, considering the city he runs, but another prisoner within Arcadia. An actor, fulfilling his role to the best of his ability.
Born from the mind of his master, an unnamed Maestro in the Oasis Ring, his original task was to nurture budding worlds - to gently ease burgeoning civilizations on a righteous path to wisdom, peace, and success. But no matter the efforts, worlds always seemed to descend into chaos and war. Hatred seemed to outweigh love, narcissism over benevolence, death over mercy. The Maestro grew weary. Tired of her creations, she destroyed her worlds one by one - ended them prematurely as she deemed necessary - until only one remained. Valhalla. Appointing her first creation, Domina, as the head of Arcadia, and by her ordinance, anyone strong enough to dethrone him will be crowned king of Valhalla.
So the wars stopped. Now, people march to only one place to die.
And Domina's heart dies as well, bit by bit, with every sacrifice he is forced to make - because he is a creature born to love and nurture. Because all he wants is to see his master smile again.
