Smile though your heart is aching Smile even though its breaking When there are clouds in the sky, you'll get by If you smile through your fear and sorrow Smile and maybe tomorrow You'll see the sun come shining through for you Light up your face with gladness Hide every trace of sadness Although a tear may be ever so near That's the time you must keep on trying Smile, what's the use of crying You'll find that life is still worthwhile If you just smile
A Tail of Woe A fabled cat of legend, Cheshire was named after the cat from Lewis Carols' "Alice in Wonderland"s Cheshire cat for his never-fading grin. His story starts long ago when he was kept under the watchful eye of a grim reaper named Death. The reaper was looking for a companion, someone to keep him company while he went about his daily duties of gathering the dead. He picked out Cheshire from a litter of kittens, all having an almost supernatural nature about them, but Cheshire was the one that stood out to him the most. With odd markings, and a very happy personality, the ghost-like kitten was perfect for him. The gloom and doom that came with the title of being Death more often than not got the better of him, so this little kitten was to help him keep his mind off his job.
And the cat did just that. Playful, rambunctious, and happy, the cat gave Death a run for his money. The feline would often play with his scythe, or mess with his robes~ and a few times he found himself causing trouble with Death's steed. Though, time came to give this kitten a name, and upon noting the 'smile' upon the kitten's face when he looked at him, Death decided to call him 'Cheshire', since it seemed rather suiting at the time. When he brought Death a dead, white rabbit as a 'present', it sealed it.
The cat proved to be good entertainment, keeping Death's spirits up and making sure the reaper didn't get too depressed on the job. Over time, the cat not only found a job keeping Death entertained, but as well as something useful he could do. Having a fascination with gold coins, the cat often picked them up and left them on the eyes of the dead. These dead were the ones that Death would ferry to the afterlife. With this other purpose, the feline felt even more fulfilled with his job as the reaper's pet.
Though, there came a day when no matter what the feline did, he could not cheer up Death. Troubled by this, the feline attempted to get his attention, only able to get the reaper to look at him. Cheshire gave him his classic smile, and slowly, it reflected on the reaper's face. "I am not sure how you can always be so happy....but whatever you do, whatever life gives you, hold onto that~ don't ever loose your smile" was what the reaper told him, and Cheshire has never disobeyed. Like a curse, the feline made sure to remember to always smile- no matter what. If this made the reaper happy, that was enough for him.
Then, one day, the reaper did not show up at their usual meeting place. Cheshire looked and waited, smiling yet, but the reaper did not show. He was a bit concerned, but went on with his task of laying coins on the eyes of the dead. Waiting. A day. A Week. A Month. 5 Years passed, and Cheshire still waited. Forever smiling, for he was not able to frown or grow tired of the expression. Almost like a spell, he was cursed to smile. His master asked him to do so- he could not- would not disobey. It made master happy. Which meant he would return. One day, and on that day, Cheshire would still be smiling for him.
That day never came, and the longer Cheshire waited, the worse he got. His mind began to keep him company, the solitude beyond what he could handle. He became mad, crazed, insane. He collected coins, hoping that if he gathered them, the reaper would return and they could continue their job. Maybe he'll come back if I am ready to work?. Though, even as he collected mounds of golden coins, the reaper did not show. Then he taught himself to speak. Maybe if I can talk, Master will come back?. He spoke, fluently and punctually, though with a hint of a brittish/austrailian accent, for it was all he knew, all he ever had heard. Still, his master did not come. Maybe if I can change into a human, Master will come back?. So he taught himself how to transform, first into a dog, then into a monkey, and then into a human. That smile, still very much upon his face. The reaper still did not come.
Maybe Master left because of me? Did I do something wrong? I should tell him I'm sorry if I did...
But Cheshire did not know how to get out of the realm he was so used to. And he was afraid to leave, for what if Death returned while he was gone? Death would probably get mad at him if he left. So he waited longer. Continued to sit in his delusion, several times his mind making him believe he herd something, or saw someone. He stayed like this for so long, he began to forget. He began to forget everything.
Who...am I waiting for?.... I should go find them... Whoever they are....
So he left, walking a road that lead to nowhere, not sure of where he was even at anymore. He walked for what felt like ages until stumbling across a light. This light lead him to the mortal world, where he resides now. He knows he's looking for something, but he can't remember what it was. His smile never fades, though he doesn't know why. More often than not, he feels like crying, but won't let himself cry, frown, or even twitch his lip into anything less than a smile. He has to keep smiling, even if he's dying inside.
But why...?
