Pet Profile
~Prologue~
He was cold, so cold and each breath he took caused pain to course through his right side. Beside him he could hear his mother's labored breathing. He could just make out her form on the floor to his left, but the dark made it hard to see the extent of her injuries. He could see his elder sister on his right much clearer, but she had stopped breathing quiet some time ago.
Outside he could faintly make out the sounds of a struggle. Which meant his father and elder brother must still be alive, fighting.
His gaze flicked up towards the ceiling and the chandelier that hung from it. The suspended crystals glimmered dully in the dim light filtering into the room through the open window. The boy wasn't sure how long he laid there staring at those crystals, the blood loss was making him light headed and time was passing in a strange fashion.
There was a shift to his left that drew his attention and after a moment of confusion he began to hear his mother's almost inaudible sobs. He closed his eyes tightly and fought back his own grief, her sudden movement and reaction could only mean that his infant brother in her arms was now dead.
"Mother..." he hadn't even realized he had spoken until his mother shushed him.
"Shh my sweet boy." She whispered to him, "You must be silent. When he comes back you must not make a sound and when he leaves you must get far away from this place. Quickly... quietly." He heard her intake a shuddered breath before a soft warmth began at his right side.
"Mother, stop!" He whispered frantically, knowing that she was using her own precious energy to heal him when she should have been using it on herself or his siblings. It wasn't much, she had no wand to direct the magic but it was enough to halt the majority of the blood loss.
"Shh," She hushed again, her voice sounding weaker than before. "You have to live... you have to escape."
The boy let out a sound of distress. "How could I leave without you? Any of you?"
"You must!" She shifted positions and tried to peer up at him, as she did so he heard a sickening wet sound just before she took another labored breath. "Damhan, You must... must escape. Escape as far as you can. As fast as you can. You must live... and you can not... can not go to anyone. H-He must... believe yourre...dead..." and with that she closed her eyes and spoke no more.
The boy bite his lip to hold back a sob as his mother took her last breath, the body of his infant brother still cradled in her arms.
Moments later there was a sharp cry from outside, followed closely by a flash of light and the sound of something heavy hitting the ground. All sound stopped for what felt like an eternity. Then he heard the footsteps, approaching slowly, deliberately. They were not the familiar steps of his father or his elder brother. The boy closed his eyes tight against the knowledge of what that meant for his family.
Gone, they're all gone.
The sound of the approaching footsteps thundered through his pulse, through his every shaking breath as they come closer. He kept his eyes closed and shifted to his uninjured side to better hide his breathing.
He heard the footsteps enter the room and pause, before slowly beginning to circle the bodies of his family. The foot steps stopped by his elder sister and the boy parted his eyes ever so slightly, watching as her body was nudged and pushed over, her movements limp and lifeless. A shadowed form knelt beside her and gathered something up from the pool of dark liquid exposed when her body was moved.
The boy quickly closed his eyes and held his breath as the footsteps approached him next. He was nudged as well and it took ever fiber of his will power to keep from crying out at the pain it caused. He felt the figure kneel beside him as well and he heard a soft scraping sound to his right. He remained still and thankfully the footsteps soon continued to his mother before leaving the room entirely.
The boy stayed in the same position until the first hints of morning lightened the sky out the window across from where he lay. Only then rising up and slipping out of the house as quietly as possible and into the woods beyond.
The boy ran as fast as his injuries would allow, his path obscured by the dim light and the tears that blurred his vision. But he didn't stop, his mother's words echoing in his mind. He had to get as far away, as quickly as he could, before his uncle discovered he had survived.
