Pet Profile
"Let the world change around me. I have no interest in your mortal affairs.
Donkeys, as they say, live a long time."

Magic is a powerful force, and for the longest time, it was one that was unknown to the human race. But when research finally gave way to understanding, when the time came that money could buy magic, it began to spread like a virus through the aristocracy.
Perhaps it was a little too much like a virus. Though these humans possessed influence and power among their peers, they did not have the balance between substance and energy that magical creatures existed upon. They stole the magic from its source, and therefore had no preexisting way of supporting it in their own bodies.
But magic has its own way of adapting, and it quickly found new energy sources. In some, the magic stole from them time, aging their body with every use until their hearts stopped working, overwhelmed by the great energy. And in some, the magic found a much better fuel than physical matter. Magic began to feed on emotion, to thrive on it - to become irreparably connected to it.
They went numb, unable to feel. But when they used magic - when they entered that enhanced state of pure energy - they found they could recover their emotions along with their power. It was addicting, a drug for the rich. And the more they used magic, the less they were able to feel when the power rushing through them subsided each time. They became obsessed, using magic more and more just so they could feel something, anything. And eventually, not even magic could reach their shattered emotions. The poison would take its natural course and leave the most powerful warlocks as husks in the end. The greedy aristocracy, desperate for power and desperate not to drop beneath their peers, decayed their class in this way.
But it was not like this for everyone. Not everyone desired to feel. For one, magic was not a drug to stimulate, but a medicine to subdue.
For the young boy who knew more of regret and disappointment than of joy, emotions were painful. But if you could buy magic, then you could buy that unfeeling bliss.
He found it was surprisingly easy to throw humanity aside.

A rare addition to teams, Ennui prefers to work alone - working with others simply increases the risk that he will be forced to use magic and thus feel. In his numbed state, he has little motivation for the job, it's just something he's good at where he can be closely regulated. When he's able to feel the job terrifies him, but he's come to care for his coworkers and is dedicated to their safety. From this strange perspective of being part of the team but not really belonging to it fully, he can perhaps see the risks - and lies - most clearly, and in his feeling state is often the voice of caution for the team. They tend to treat him as a child when in this state, however, and his warnings go unheeded.

I wish I could reciprocate
your kindness.
Is it really possible to enjoy life so much? I wish you could teach me.
You know how it feels to be different. We share that same hardened strength.
I don't understand your kind of pleasure.
