Pet Profile
The brilliant orange and red hues of the Inferno Kingdom's volcanoes came alive at night. Fuego watched the flames flicker and dance before him, bathing in the sparks the active lava sprayed. He breathed in the sulfurous air and rested his chin over his hands, the perpetual flame on his right hand tickling his snout. The view from his cave was truly stunning. Carved on the side of a very active volcano, a waterfall of lava often flowed over the cave's entrance. Because of this, the opening was smooth and black and, consequently, was a very comfortable place to lounge. Before the Inferno Gourix lived hundreds of volcanoes, ranging from monstrous to puny, from calm to wild. But none were as towering as the volcano in which resided. He felt like a King up in his overlooking tower, which could explain his strong since of entitlement towards his Kingdom.
However, Fuego could not shake the feeling that life here had become dull. More familiar with every nook and cranny of the fiery valley than any other pet, there was simply nothing left to discover, no new adventures waiting. Potential friends were scarce as the Kingdom was pretty barren. He inhaled and breathed out a long strip of fire above the volcanic abyss below him and rolled on his back. He let his arms fall forward and closed his eyes, wishing for something to come along and make life thrilling again. He opened his eyes and concentrated on the brightest star in front of him through spurts of lava and flame. The star began to bounce up and down at a steady pace.
Fuego blinked his eyes and flipped around immediately, concentrating on the bright, bouncing star in front of him. Completely amazed and transfixed on the sky, he noticed the star next to it start to bounce in unison with the first star. Suddenly, a huge patch of stars, maybe one hundred of them or so, began twisting and swirling and dancing through the air. They seemed to be moving to the same beat, as if they were dancing to an unheard song. For a brief second, Fuego thought he heard the corresponding music faintly in the distance. The stars all stretched downwards into a point directly above a plateau in the middle of the volcanic land. After the stars appeared to spit out a small, dark figure, they were hurled back to their original places in the sky and were as still as Fuego had always thought they would forever be.
Without thinking for even a second, Fuego leaped out of his cave and sprinted on all fours to the plateau. He expertly moved amongst the volcanoes, dodging lava lakes and jumped to and fro on large pieces of volcanic rock. A mote of liquid rock separated the Gourix from the plateau. As soon as it came into sight, Fuego growled, picked up pace and soared over the massive mote, claws first. His upper body landed atop the plateau and his lower half clung to the side of the cliff. He hoisted himself upward with ease and crept forward with caution. As he continued to creep, he faintly heard growling. The flames on Fuego's constantly flame-lit tail, spikes, and hand grew and flickered intensely, casting huge shadows on the flat surface of the plateau. The growling grew louder and drew nearer. The light he cast did nothing to reveal the approaching foe.
Suddenly, a sharp gust of wind cut off Fuego's back legs, on which he was walking, and he clumsily fell forward. His attacker made a light chirping sound and growled again. Fuego, who has never reacted well to being made look like a fool, furiously blew a huge cloud of fire in front of him.
"Ferdie!" a sharp female voice called from a bush.
The gust of wind whimpered and rushed to the voice and crawled underneath the bush.
Fuego rushed to the bush and pulled to leaves and branches open. Just as he did so, a jolt of energy bolted him backwards from whence he came.
"What do you think you're doing?!" said the same voice from before. Its owner stepped out from the bush. Before him stood a Gourix unlike any he had seen before. She was quite difficult to make out, as her skin blended in nearly perfectly with the night sky backdrop behind her. Not only was her skin the same shade of navy blue as the sky, but it also consisted of stars that looked just as real. Her face had foreign, star-like markings and from it glowed two brilliant, silver eyes, ablaze with fury. Between her ankles weaved in and out a small, foxlike creature. It's fur was the same sky-like blue and silver as its owner.
Fuego looked at the girl, dumfounded.
"You could have burned him, you know. It's not nice to pick on pets who are so much smaller than you."
Fuego blinked then remembered that he was angry.
"Well maybe you shouldn't let him run around growling and tripping people!"
"He was trying to protect me." The creature jumped up onto her shoulders and nuzzled her.
"Look, I wasn't trying to attack anyone. I blew the fire at him for my own protection."
She scoffed and rolled her eyes.
"Protection against a Foxusha? That's a little pathetic, don't you think? The biggest creature he could seriously threaten is a fly."
Fuego's flames flickered dangerously.
"Well I didn't know what he was, did I?!" He took a deep breath. "Look, I think we got off on the wrong foot here. We haven't even been properly introduced! My name is Fuego. And you are--?"
And just like that the strange Gourix and her pet took off, bounding through the valley.
"Hey--!"
Fuego jolted after them. As he ran alongside a large lava lake, he spotted them on the other side.
"Why are you following me?!" she yelled across to him.
"Who are you?" he retorted.
And just like that, the two sky-like creatures jumped upwards and were swallowed by the night sky. Fuego looked up and saw a trail of bouncing stars heading in the opposite direction of him. He watched until all the stars were once again still.
