Oh That Voodoo You Do
Marie knew voodoo, in its origins, resisted simplistic definitions of good and evil. The snake in the Garden of Eden offered knowledge. Always a good. Humanity did not 'fall' from grace into sin. Humanity was a never-ending blending of impulses: to heal and to hurt; to help and to harm. But in New Orleans, African-based faiths blended with Catholicism, and linguistic, cultural shifts changed Voudu into voodoo, with resonant echoes in hoodoo, folk magick, and southern rootwork. In the New World, faith, like people, became a mixed-blood stew. Evil, as a concept, thrived until it turned on faith itself-pop culture stereotypes convinced both blacks and whites that the slaves' ancient faith was steeped in barbarism with an evil, killing intent. Part of her struggle was to stir, re-spice, the stew-reclaiming, reasserting, voodoo's nurturing, beneficent power.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Papa Ghede) Ghede is the eternal figure in black, controlling the eternal crossroads at which everyone must someday cross over. His symbol is the cross upon a tomb. Known as the spirit of death, other spirits fear him and try to avoid him.
Baron Samedi represents the death side of Ghede (Guede).
He talks through his nose, is cynical, jovial, and tells broad jokes. His language is full of the unexpected. He is the power behind the magic that kills. He controls the souls of those who have met death as a result of magic.
He loves smoking and drinking and is rarely seen without a cigar in his mouth or a glass of rum in his bony fingers. Baron Samedi can usually be found at the crossroad between the worlds of the living and the dead. When someone dies he digs their grave and greets their soul after they have been buried, leading them to the underworld.
As well as being master of the dead, Baron Samedi is also a giver of life. He can cure any mortal of any disease or wound, if he thinks it is worthwhile. His powers are especially great when it comes to voodoo curses and black magic. Even if somebody has been afflicted by a hex which brings them to the verge of death, they will not die if the Baron refuses to dig their grave. So long as this mighty spirit keeps them out of the ground they are safe. He also ensures all corpses rot in the ground to stop any soul being brought back as a brainless zombie. What he demands in return depends on his mood. Sometimes he is content with his followers wearing black, white or purple clothes or using sacred objects; he may simply ask for a small gift of cigars, rum, black coffee, grilled peanuts or bread. But sometimes the Baron requires a voodoo ceremony to help him cross over into this world.
*****
Ghede kneeled in front of a large altar, two black candles in the shape of skulls illuminated his face which was void of all emotions as he concentrated on the ritual at hand. He began to chant as he reached for a small bad of powder, slowly making his way over to a man lying on a stone table, his arms and legs bound by blessed bindings.
He reached into the draw string bag and started to sprinkle the bound man with the substance; he soon began to writhe left to right as if the contents of the small bag burned his exposed skin. Ghede only looked on as he once again kneeled before his altar where he began to draw in the Gods themselves to aid him in his ritual. He drew in a breathe as he poured a mysterious red liquid into a bowl.
Softly whispering, he picked up the bowl filled with the liquid over to the man who now appeared to be in a deep sleep, his chest rose steady as Ghede placed the bowl on his chest before mixing in a handful of herbs and with a slight wave of his hand, the bowl seemed to fold the herbs into the crimson drink.
Lifting the man's right arm, he studied the intricate markings that lined his torso, arms and fingers. In places the markings were fading and in others, the were gone completely. He withdrew a small knife and cut the flesh on both him and his guest whereas he once again added the new ingredients into the bowl. The mixture hissed and sputtered as if it wanted to reject the new addition but with a simple chant, the concoction was now complete. He lifted the bowl to the man's lips and with a simple word, Ghede ordered him to drink. As the man did, his body jerked and convulsed, His muscles tensed and he let out a scream as the markings on his body came to life, they wound across his body, etching deep into his skin. Blood tricked down from his wounds as the newly formed markings slowly settled and then were silenced.
Soon Ghede placed his palm on the man's chest and felt for something only he knew what.
'It is done, my friend, your blood lust is quench once more,' Undoing the restraints, he helped his friend off the table and helped him to the awaiting car outside.
'See you at the club tonight old friend,'
Ghede nodded. 'Of course, I would never turned down you Vallo.'
Vallo nodded and as his driver helped him into the back of his car, he fell back into a restful sleep.
Ghede turned and with a slight smile, slipped back into the shadows..
