Irene is a scientist, she works almost exclusively with plants and other organism like them. Kind of on the nerdy side, she tends to put a lot of her time and effort into her work. It's not that she's anti-social or anything, just really focused on her work. Although she only gets to work on what she really wants to about 30% of the time, she still enjoys the fact that she can work with plants. The other 70% is given to the people who pay for her use of a laboratory, their studies mostly involving chemicals and their effects on plants. She doesn't like this mostly due to the fact that it sometimes hurts the plants and she can hear their cries.
Yes, Irene can hear plants, their cries, their words and uses this information to discover more about their foreign world. She can spend hours simply talking with them, and does so frequently. Sometimes she can be found sitting in a field of flowers, just sitting there for hours on end.
Quite fond of her plants, she's sort of a anit-vegetarian. She does eat plants, but has a hard time doing so without constantly apologizing to her meal. Her sister Iris, who does most the cooking, often prepares their meals in unique ways so that whether it was made with plants or animals, it would be hard to tell.
Now, how exactly Iris came upon the cursed carousel is unknown, as it's thought to be that she has only been encased in it's shell for a short time. Nevertheless, she is grateful for being released. Since then, Iris has become well-known and can be easily approached without fear. She is gentle and kind, and will do her best to help anyone in need, though, avoids the fire-benders for obvious reasons. Some of them are just careless with their abilities and that bothers her.
