Which would be worse - to live as a monster, or to die as a good man?
What's wrong with living as a monster? It's pretty fun.
Do you know the story of the seven little goats? It's a gruesome story, would you like to hear?
Some time ago, in an era long past, there was an old mother goat who had seven children. She loved them as much as any mother ever could. She feared most, however, for the youngest of the children - who was said to have been kissed by the Oracle on birth, for what else would explain a stillborn child coming to life hours later? One day, the mother had to go into the mountains, to fetch food for her children. Fearing for the worst she gathered them 'round. As loving as the children were, they were quite naive.
Come my children, and listen to what I say. I must go into the mountain today. While I'm gone, bar the door and do not open it for anyone. The wolf of this mountain will not hesitate to devour you whole! His voice is coarse and paws a black as coal.
With a farewell, she left, confident that her children were safe. Seeing her leave, from the shadow of the mountain, the wolf waited some time before moving. Knocking on the door, he cried as sweetly as he could.
Open the door my children, your mother has returned, I bring you gifts for each one.
The children knew better, immediately they knew it was the voice of the wolf.
Go away, evil wolf! We know our mother's voice! She has a sweet, delicate voice - not at all like your horrible, wiry sound!
Retreating with a grumble, the wolf went into the mountains. Upon his arrival to the lynx's small home, he approached the wise sage with a plea.
Lynx, oh, wise lynx, won't you give me an herb? To salve my rough throat and make me sound like a bird.
Turned to his friend, the lynx stood and studied him. It wasn't the first time the wolf had come for help, but it wouldn't be the last either.
Mischievous wolf, what do you have planned? Your antics are odd as ever.
Although he asked, the lynx still helped his old friend. With the wave of a paw the cat produced a spindly green plant. Handing it to the wolf, he began to explain.
This is used with the same function, if you break off one of its leaves you can drink it.
With a word of thanks, the wolf drank the plant, returning to the little goats' home and knocking again.
Open the door my children, your mother has returned, I bring you gifts for each one.
"Open the door," The youngest one said, rushing up ahead of the others. "But what if it's the wolf? Asked one of his brothers. "Don't worry, I will be able to outsmart that wolf! The Oracle has never led me astray before." Again came the knock, the wolf wanted in. Turning to his siblings, the youngest spoke once more. "Quickly, quickly, hide! If he sees you here this will not work." Scrambling about as the knocking came again. One ran under the table, another in bed, the third in the oven, the fourth in a corner, the fifth in the cupboard and the sixth lay under the sink. When the six little kids hid, the seventh turned to the door. "One moment mother, I will open the door." Unbinding the locks, the door creaked open and the child let out a scream. Motioning for the wolf to remain silent, he motioned to come in. Reaching up, the child affectionately gave the wolf a kiss on the cheek and spoke loudly enough for the children to hear. "Wolf, oh dear wolf, won't you please spare my life? My siblings and I are but skin and bones - surely we won't be a filling meal!" Moving a hand to his chin, the wolf stopped to ponder for a while, the two staring into one another's eyes and silently communicating.
"No little kid, I don't think I will. I'm terribly hungry, even skin and bones will surely fill my stomach." "No -- please spare my siblings!" Gently picking up the child, the wolf held him just above the floor as the young kid kicked at the floor, moments later he was silently placed atop the stairs and the wolf banged a fist against the wall. "Come out, come out, little kid little kid." The first to be found was the one hiding under the table, which was promptly snatched up and tossed on the floor. As he landed, the smallest of the kids climbed down and sat atop his brother, using a hand to cover the eldest one's mouth and smiling. One would assume that a child would be put at ease, seeing their brother smile, however the smallest one's face twisted into that of a monster. Using his other hand, the smallest placed a hand on his brother's chest, pressing fingertips against the rib cage before digging in. Keeping him pinned on the floor, he watched his brother writhe in pain and muffled screams ... before the sound of something breaking was heard. Reaching into the rib cage, three of the bones were snapped and ripped out one by one until a bloody mass lay in place of the kid's chest. With tears sliding across his face, he brother could only watch as the youngest pulled out his heart. Pressing it against his cheek, he smiled for a moment. "Brother," he spoke softly, seeing the eyes slowly roll towards him. "Mako loves you very much. Mako loves you to death you know." Seeing his dear brother's eyes roll, the body stopped moving and he bit into the bloody heart. As the screaming and movement died down, the wolf peered back with another of the children in tow. Too terrified to move, it was one of his sisters, the one that'd been hiding in the corner.
"Why..." Visibly shaking with fear, the girl stared at her brother in terror, head whipping to the wolf as she saw her brother's emotionless eyes once again giving silent directions to the wolf. Throwing her against the wall, the wolf snarled before tearing into the little girl, only devouring bits and pieces of her body, avoiding all the bones. Letting the girl fall to the floor, the wolf approached the youngest and picked him up in an arm. Turning to the remaining kids, who'd chosen hiding places where they couldn't see, the wolf spoke. "You can tell this to your mother. You have lost three little kids. Every year, you can run and hide all you want - every year, one of you will come with me." As he turned to leave, Mako dropped his brother's heart onto the floor. Hugging the wolf's thick neck fur, his eyes and bloodied face were smiling with a disturbed glee.
Shortly after, the mother returned, horrified at the scene. Two of her kids lay dead on the floor, four of them hid from sight. One of them - the youngest, absent with a trail of blood. The children relayed the message, terrified and scarred. She swore that the wolf would be proven wrong, her children would stay alive. What she didn't know, however, was that the youngest of her children was still alive, and that he would come to end them.
Returning to the wolf's den, the kid was bathed in the cavern underneath. "Fenrir, I'm hungry." Leaning over the wolf, he held the carnivore's neck from behind, wanting attention. "Yes, Mako. I suppose we can just go into town." Descending the mountain, the two entered the town and, with a little magic from the wise Lynx, became human. As the years passed, Mako was found by the emperor..well, that's what the humans called him. For a time he served as something like a visionary, with Fenrir by his side. However, a day never went by that the child and wolf didn't think about what they swore to the old mother goat.
On the day of a solar eclipse, the child foretold the emperor's death and was sentenced to execution. When his soul left the earth, the reapers escorted him to Limbo where he would shortly be sorted out. As the days passed, however, his soul was kicked about the reapers like a kangaroo court and they were replaced by the next generation. Without an idea of who the child was or how long he'd been there, they sent him back to be reincarnated. While in limbo the child grew, physically and mentally, because he hadn't truly died. The day he was born, he was meant to be dead - but he'd been giving another chance. Not by god, but by Death; the olden creature had taken mercy on the soul that had not yet had a chance to glow. When he was send back across the river Styx, the first thing he did was search for Fenrir. The wolf had aged, although he was a supernatural creature, he'd still visibly aged; and his family was no different. Over a century had passed since Mako's execution, so the humans no longer knew of him. After so long, they returned to the mountains where they lived in the past. To surprise, the old mother goat and what remained of her children were still there now too. The children had grown up, but they still lived with her, and it was the moment of his return, that the youngest of the kids had decided to bring about the promise of old.
The first new moon of his return, Mako acted. Rapping at the door, he called out softly. "Big brother, big brother, can you come out?" Out of curiosity, the elder of the two brothers answered the door. Looming over Mako, obscuring the sight, Fenrir grasped hold of the boy with such speed that the door slammed shut behind them. In the distance of the mountains, the refuge of stone; the youngest tore into his beloved brother's chest and pulled apart his ribcage with such might that it barely made a sound. As he stared at the beating mass, the wolf approached and looked on hungrily. An odd feeling churned in Mako's stomach. A heat woke and caused him to hunger. A single glance upon the pulsing insides told him everything - only that palpating lump would sate his hunger. Ripping it out, he licked the surface as a hungry dog would, turning away from the body while the wolf devoured what was left. The first bite, the tender organ was a new sensation to him, but feeling the blood gush into his mouth was exhilarating and he knew he wouldn't be able to eat anything aside from it. Morning came, and the child woke to the wolf sleeping with him to keep the kid warm. They heard the grieving, the distress of the mother - what once was seven became four, and after that was down to three. Two years passed, and there was one left. She was a strong child, who loved their mother more than the other kids, and she would do everything to protect her old mother goat. "Big sister, big sister, won't you come out? Big brother is calling, he wants you to come out." At first the door didn't open, from the other side of the door her voice rang out. "I have no little brother, who is the specter who calls!" Looking at one another, the wolf and child turned back to the door. "But it is true, for I have returned, dear sister. The wolf did not kill me, but he is coming. Hurry - you must hide me within the house, for I cannot survive in the mountains." Oh, how naive. With an overwhelmed sense of justice, she unlocked the door. The moment she did, it was all over. Against the moonless night, only a dark figure stood at the door, and the only thing seen was Mako's disturbed smile as he raised a hand and reached in. After so many tries, he learned how to grasp the heart with as little force needed as possible, and now...now, he held her beating life in his hands. Seeing this, the old mother goat fell, she lay dead on the floor.
Pulling out the withering heart, the child's hunger devoured the new food source. The wolf noticed something odd though, the body stood still, it did not collapse like before. This caught Mako's attention as well. The cavity he'd bore into her body was beginning to close. Not from any sort of recovery, but it was being pulled shut. Across the torn flesh, he could see a thick black string sewing it back up. "Fenrir, do you see that?" He asked, wiping the blood from his lips as he turned to look at the wolf. "See what?" He asked, unsure of what to look at despite the child pointing to the now-closed cavity. "She healed?" "No..there's string there...like sewing with a cord." "Mako, I don't see anything." He replied, touching against the child's cheek. "..Curious. We're done here, I want to go home." Dismissing the matter, like when Mako was a young child, the wolf picked him up with an arm and turned to leave. Pausing, he turned to see the girl following them. "Mako.." "Get away from me!" Snarling, the child stopped and looked on in surprise as the body moved back, vacant eyes reflecting the starlight. "I think it's obeying you." As if to test again, Mako watched it carefully before giving an order. "Sit." On command, the body sat down and the wolf chuckled. "So you can make slaves."
The night passed, the next day was nothing new - in fact it was almost droll. While Mako took on the form of a human and left behind his past in the mountains, Fenrir eventually died of age. Up until his last breath, the two were inseparable, however, because Mako was no longer mortal, Fenrir could not stay at his side. As the eras passed, the child began to study acupuncture. It wasn't that he cared to save humans, but the aspect of playing with needles was quite compelling. Over time he moved offshore to an uncharted island that was known to claim the lives of sailors, an island shrouded in fog. More and more people began disappearing, but it was always blamed on the life-claiming island. A myth arose that on moonless nights, the sound of a child calling for his family can be heard...and those that hear it..are never heard from again.
I'm waking up to ash and dust - I wipe my brow and I sweat my rust - I'm breathing in the chemicals - I'm breaking in, shaping up, then checking out on the prison buzz
This is it, the apocalypse - All systems go, the sun hasn't died - Deep in my bones, straight from inside - I'm waking up, I feel it in my bones - Enough to make my systems blow
