Sighing, she stared down at the wash-bucket. Still before her lay piles and piles of clothes. Her hands were already cracked and bloody. The soap that she used to scrub every shirt and skirt down to a thread stung her crimson scratches and the cold wind felt unpleasant on her thin clothes. Fighting the urge to moan, she continued. Surely a far worse punishment would await unfinished work...
Life being difficult was new to Mona. She had been raised in a privileged house-hold, an only child. Her mother had left when she was very young, and as she grew up her father spoiled her, hoping it'd make up to some degree the lack of a mother. Mona's life was spent dozing in her riches, her only knowledge of the outside world naive.
Then the war came. The war was fought between many different countries, and was predicted to be bloody and long. Mona felt no concern, believing her Father and her would not be touched by it, but she was wrong. Her country needed as many soldiers as it could get, and a draft was issued for at least one man from each house-hold.
Officials felt no pity for Mona. Her father was told to leave immediately, and wasn't even given a week to sort things out. After her father left, government workers immediately began to arrange sale of the estate and any expensive items inside. They doubted that Mona's father would return and even if he did, they didn't want to have the large house remain untouched for years. Mona was allowed to pack a small bag, only full of a few pictures of her father and clothes, and she was shipped off to an orphanage.
It was completely different from any thing she had ever experienced. She was treated with little respect or kindness, she was no more special than anyone else. She was given chore upon chore to earn her keep. If she had the choice, she'd be out of there in a second. The clothes were musty, small and moth-bitten, the beds were old and stained. The food was stale, moldy and an odd odor clung to all of it. All the orphans were given very little in exchange for a lot, in Mona's opinion. Occasionally people stopped by looking to adopt, but not many had space in their home to throw about because of the war. When they did, they wanted young, cute, children. Not pessimistic, cold teenagers like Mona. Mona tried to be kind and cute when potential adopters spoke to her, but she found she didn't have the strength in her to fake it. She was rude and bitter, and could care less. Chances were she'd be anyone that adopted her's slave too.
She wanted to go home and it broke her heart that she'd probably never see her father again. Tears slipped from her eyes whenever she thought about it... hear they came...
Mona bit her lip and turned back to her clothes. She finished, some what sloppily, but discovered her didn't care. Not anymore. She was done. Kudos to those who could stand it, but she was sick of orders and didn't want to have to suffer in this orphanage just to be released when she was 18. She wanted to..... join the war. Pose as a man. She was fit, the chores she had had to endure were difficult and helped her stay strong and keep her reflexes and skills sharp. Just the idea made her heart pump faster, her cheeks redden. She wanted to find her Dad. She wanted to be reunited with him. She was going to do it.
She waited a few days. All she could think about was her plan. She knew escape wouldn't be easy, but she was willing to persevere. She waited until night. Looking at herself in the shabby, cracked bathroom mirrors, she sighed. She was much to girly. She chopped off her beautiful, long blonde hair and stuck it in her bag to throw away later. Hesitantly, she ran her lone pocket knife across her cheek. A scar. A cut. Did that make her seem more manly? Peering in the mirror for the last time, she finally was satisfied. She quietly packed a bag with her few belongings and food she had saved and scaled down the wall outside her wing. She climbed the fence quietly and nearly cheered when she realized her success. It had been much easier than she thought.
The next few days passed quickly. She slept in alleys while traveling to the nearest sign-up agency she could find. When she arrived, she lied about her name and age, and was surprised and pleased that was immediately accepted. The war really needed volunteers... Hopefully, she asked about her father. The agency, however, knew nothing about him. Frowning, she hoped for the best. It wouldn't be hard.. would it? Different leagues met up on occasion, right? Mona was suddenly very nervous.. but it was too late now.
She forced herself to remain confident. It was soon her time to be shipped off for training before the war, and she slipped easily into the habit of disguising her voice and trying to change and wash up alone. She found it odd to be so close to men, but she reminded herself of her goal and remained calm.
Training was helpful and.... fun. Mona ended up being one of the strongest and caught on quickly to most of the weapons. She laughed to herself when she wondered what people would think if they knew she was a girl. She became skilled, strong, and nearly unbeatable. She dreamed of her father and of a normal life. She made some friends, eventually. She didn't regret leaving the orphanage. She didn't want to go to war, and avoided thinking of what it really would be like. But her pros outweighed her cons and on she went.
Finally it was time to go. She was determined to battle, maybe. But also to try to see around and certainly find him. He was her only family. She had nobody else. No pets, even. No money and no home and no friends. No hope if
