Hunter Lynn was a towheaded child of about eight years old. She was cute the generic way in which many children are at that age, with freckles dusting her upturned nose and large, hazel-green eyes. As the only offspring of a busy couple who lived on several acres outside of a rural community, she also suffered the not uncommon curse of being a lonely child.
She did not however dwell on this as some do. Hunter was a BELIEVER. To the untrained eye her patch of land may have only been a rocky hill covered with live/scrub oak, mesquite and cacti, but for a BELIEVER, it was a land filled with beauty and magic. She had always know that there were things that couldn't be seen by just anyone lurking around ever corner. She never doubted that she would someday be one of the privileged few. It just hadn't happened yet.
Today, though... today felt different. there was something shimmering in the air, just out of reach. She just knew that today things would finally change.

Oleander was "brought to life" due to the imaginative powers of a lonely little girl. Often her only friends were the ones she created for herself. The countryside she played in indeed contained things that could not be seen by everyone and one day, one such creature decided to grant the child one such friend.
Though he was the size of a large German Shepherd and somewhat fearsome to behold, Hunter was never afraid of her creature. She named him Oleander after the pretty flowers that grew in her mother's garden, but she wasn't allowed to pick. The two spent every moment she could spare from home and school together and she never betrayed his existence to another living soul.
Years passed in which the little girl grew and her family moved away. Oleander was left to roam his hillside alone. His home is much changed from when Hunter was by his side. Part of the land was sold to a local rock quarry and every year he finds it harder and harder to stay hidden away. In a sad twist of fate, the creation of a lonely child is intensely lonely himself. He is the only one of his kind and his sole companion is a small fox that he adopted when it's mother's death left it an orphan.
He hope's against hope for his little girl's return.
