Muffled screams filled the Reef
and tears waded into the ocean seamlessly
The water was hot with blood

She opened her eyes, blinded by the sun
rising from behind the water
line. Like many mornings before,
she blinked away the sun spots and
sat up, brushing sand out of her hair.
No matter how many times she looked
out over the Reef, it took away
her breath. The water and sky lit on fire
and became one seamless
being, inviting her into it's warm light like
a temptress into silken
sheets.

The girl washed off the sleep from her face
as crashing waves licked at
her toes, beckoning her to join them. She sighed
heavily at them as if
they had had this discussion many times before.
No matter how much
she wanted...
she could never go back home.
