Pet Profile
DEATH..Fair lady, lay your costly robes aside.
No longer may you glory in your pride ;
Take leave of all your carnal vain delight,
I'm come to summons you away to-night.
LADY..What bold attempt is this? pray let me know
From whence you come, and whither I must go:
shall I. who am a lady,' stoop or bow
To such a pale-faced visage? who art thou ?
DEATH...DO you not know me? I will tell thee then:-
Tis I that conquer all the SOBS of men;
No pitch of honour from my dart is free:
My name is Death. Have you not heard of me?

The hospital was silent, all the visitors had gone and only the skeleton staff was on duty. The occasional security guard passed down the empty halls. She yawned as she glanced over her shoulder at the clock. Sighing, she went back to her paperwork. A faint breeze and a flickering of the lights brought her gaze up to look to see if anyone was out of their rooms but she saw or found no one.
She shivered as another breeze blew past. She wrapped her shawl over her shoulders and once again went back to work. However someone was present although totally invisible to any living being. The stranger continued his walk down to the end of the hall where a small child laid. Her breath was raspy as a machine helped her lungs supply oxygen to her frail frame. Slowly she stirred, eyes slowly opening to meet his. Startled at first, she suddenly recognized him. The one who often came to visit her at night when everyone went home and the hospital became eerily quiet. She struggled to sit up in her bed as he took a seat next her. He looked over and smiled.
"Hello Elisa."
"Hi." her voice was no more than a whisper.
"I see you have a new friend." he looked over at the newest member of her growing collection of stuffed animals.
"Mommy gave me him today." She exclaimed, reaching for him and giving him a big hug.
"Does he have a name?"
"His name is Angel."
He touched the small bear's paw, shaking it. "Nice to meet you Angel."
Elisa smiled and looked up at her friend; this man who had begun to visit her six months ago, when her illness had suddenly returned. He would visit when the hospital quieted down and it seemed that only she could see him and even at her young age, she knew he wasn't normal. His skin was fair almost white yet had a faint glow as if he had an aura surrounding him. He always had a smile on his face when she saw him.
However as his light brightened her nights, her light was slowing fading. Her family had held out hope that she would get better but her doctors had a different opinion. She was declining fast and there was little more they could do. Samual smiled at her and caresses her head. Elisa smiled but the smile faded as the pain once more returned.
"Elisa, how about you and I go on a journey?"
She looked over at her mother sleeping in the chair, her chest rising with every new breath.
"Can Mommy come too?"
"I'm sorry but where we are going she can't go."
Elisa looked at her mother and then at Samual .
"She'll wonder where I went. I can't leave her by herself."
Samual smiled and took her hand.
"Where we are going, there is only happiness and no pain. You'll see her again I promise and I'll make sure when that time comes, I'll be there to take her to you."
Elisa nodded and Samual placed his lips to her forehead, whispering words that only he understood. Soon a white light embraced both of them, sending waves of warmth through her body. Elisa sighed as the pain disappeared. Looking down she saw herself, eyes closed as if she was sleeping. She looked over at her mother and as she grabbed Angel, she kissed her for the last time.
Samual stood in the doorway, he reached his hand out and Elisa took it, her tiny hand held tightly to his while the other held her bear tightly to her chest.
"Let's go home, Elisa."
With that, they walked past the front desk and into the night. The nurse pulled away from her paperwork when she heard someone yelling for assistance. She took off down the hall to Room 417.
The woman was clutching her young daughter who had passed away only moments ago, her lips curled into a smile.
***********************************************
Time is feared, yet it has no corporeal image to see, no taste to poison, no noise to frighten. It is ageless, it can make metal rust, a infant grow and mature, it can wither and kill, it can decay food and plants. In the end time does catch us no matter how far and fast we try to run.
Yet for us reapers, time stands still, in some instances it fears us for we are the ones it cannot touch, cannot scare and cannot kill. We travel through centuries wearing cloaks of eternal night. We do not carry the infamous Scythe as so often we are depicted carrying. We are neither evil or good. We are neutral and never takes sides for it is us who decide if one is worthy of living or dying. It is our duty for without us, your world would be more over populated and no new lives could be brought in, for one must die in order of one to be born.
We did not choose this profession, we do not choose to take lives. We long for eternal rest, to dwell in the Fields of Ashpodel with love ones and live out eternity in the light instead of walking the shadows of the dark. Perhaps we are being punished for something we did, maybe it is just fate that dealt us this hand. Whatever it is, I shall be watching and when the summer breeze grows cold, remember that you just missed the reaper.
