White, white, white ...everything seemed to have been painted over with the same color. The dirt was purged of its browns and greens and now shone brightly in the weak winter sunlight, and the trees bore so much snow they were practically buried, looking like misshapen snowmen. Only the sky retained any color; the world had turned into a land of smooth white hills with a strip of light blue above.
Thus Snowy remained quite invisible, her pure white coat blending perfectly with her surroundings. The only giveaway was her pale blue ribbons, entwined delicately around her tail and neck, and the darker grayish shade of the armor upon her back. But she was in the shade of a tree, curled up in a little hollow she’d dug the night before, so the grey blended in with the shadows.
Dawn had come and gone some time ago, and the pale winter sun shone coldly in the sky, like a jewel hidden within gauze. The sleeping Cheran blinked as the weak light slowly began invading her shaded haven, shortening the tree's dark shadow. As her bright blue eyes fell on the whitewashed scene before her, her face split into a wide, delighted grin. She adored the snow! It had probably been her very presence that caused such a heavy blanket of it; she had some abilities with the cold weather.
Suddenly quite awake and not minding the sunlight at all, Snowy bounded to her feet, her slender, fur-tipped tail swishing excitedly around her slender body. She kneaded the soft, cold snow with her paws, then stretched out her legs, sinking her front down to the ground and letting her rump stay in the air, her eyes darting around all the while. She stood and wondered where on earth she should start; there was so much snow to play in!
Snowy jumped out into the soft white hills, grinning happily; snow erupted all around her and swirled back to the ground. As it cleared, a green blotch appeared on the horizon. The little cheran blinked, confused. All the trees were blanketed in snow; hardly any green showed anywhere at all, so where had the weird blotch come from?
And it was getting bigger and bigger every second! The green 'thing' was approaching, and pretty quickly too! Snowy double blinked and took a few steps forward, tilting her head curiously. A few seconds passed and the distant oddity was slowly beginning to take shape; a wedge-shaped head, four stout legs, and some bright flashes of gold, red and blue sparked in the pale sunlight.
Were those ...horns? Snowy opened her blue eyes wider, hoping to see better, and as the green form got closer she was fairly sure it bore golden horns. Was it a Yehxil?
The stranger picked up speed and, finally, Snowy could see it clearly! It was indeed a green Yehxil, its body strewn about with thin, colorful strands of lights, its horns and thick claws bright, shining gold. It was smiling, so Snowy fearlessly approached, her own grin widening, her tail swishing about in excitement.
The Yehxil stopped, tilted its head as if it weren't quite sure of Snowy, then spoke. "I'm Surprise!"it declared, "Who are you? I come to play here every Mistmas and you've never been here before."
True; Snowy had never been to this particular part of Mistica before, but had decided to do some exploring yesterday, Mistmas Eve, and ended up falling asleep here. "I came here yesterday," Snowy said, hoping Surprise wouldn't consider her presence an intrusion, "and I'm Snowy."
"Snowy?" said Surprise, plopping his bottom down in the snow and grinning at the Cheran, "So you like the snow, too!"
Before Snowy could respond, her face was suddenly covered in cold and wet, and she couldn't see! She shook her head wildly to clear her face and eyes, confused. As the snow fell to the ground and she could see again, Surprise's mischievously grinning face gave it all away. Snowy's mouth fell open.
"Well?" said Surprise, now standing; rather, dancing, in place, "You're not letting me get away with that, are you?"
Snowy's expression now mirrored the Yehxil's; her face split into a wide, playful smile and she jumped back, wagging her tail, her blue eyes alive with excitement. She hadn't had such an exuberant playmate in a long time; this would be fun!
Surprise pounced, or tried to; Snowy dropped to her white belly, feeling the cold snow soaking through her fur, and the Yehxil found himself tumbling over the cheran, landing flat on his back, his legs waving in the air. Snowy bounded to her feet and whipped around to face Surprise; it wouldn't be much fun to tackle him since he was on the ground already.
"Ooh, no fair!" the Yehxil teased, still grinning to show he didn't really mean it, then got to his feet. He and Snowy circled each other slowly, not quite sure enough of one another to make any moves.
Then Snowy smacked her paw hard into the ground, sending a spray of snow erupting into Surprise's face. He jerked his head back to avoid it but was still showered lightly with cold, wet flakes. As it cleared he didn’t hesitate to pounce on Snowy again; this time she didn’t have time to react and he hit his mark, successfully pinning her to the ground.
"I win!" he declared, jumping off.
"Again!" Snowy cried, "You got lucky!"
"Well, catch me then!" he said, and with that, Surprise was off! He spun so quickly Snowy got a face full of snowflakes, and tore through the smooth, white landscape, laughing and calling playful taunts at her as he ran. He was fast! His golden claws dug deep into the snow, propelling him forward and keeping him from slipping.
Snowy bounded after him, her lithe white form blending in with the ground, her blue ribbons streaming out behind her, rippling with her movements and the wind. Surprise was fast, but Snowy was gaining quickly, despite her paws being ill-equipped for running on unsteady ground. The snow was freshly fallen and very soft, giving way easily every time a paw pounded the ground. She sped up, hoping to skim over the snow, but her legs were beginning to ache.
But Surprise, she noticed, was starting to lag.
Snowy grinned.
Willing her legs to keep pumping, to go faster, she managed to speed up. Surprise risked a backwards glance and Snowy was pleased to see an astonished look on his face. Then suddenly his grin widened, and the cheran didn't like the look of it. He looked like he knew something she didn't.
The "something" became clear quite quickly. Surprise suddenly skidded to a stop and veered to the left; Snowy wasn't fast enough and swiftly lost traction, feeling the snow collapse beneath her. She tripped and tumbled head over heels a good ten or fifteen feet before finally coming to a gentle, rolling stop on her back, legs in the air, just like Surprise had been earlier.
The cheran blinked snow out of her eyes and saw Surprise leaning over her, giggling and looking quite triumphant. Both of them were breathing hard from the long run through the snow, and their legs ached, but they were smiling and feeling like they'd had the time of their lives.
"Rematch?" asked Snowy, determined to get Surprise back for his little feint.
"I dunno, you look pretty beat..." said the Yehxil, with an air of mock concern.
"I am not! I'll get you this time!" Snowy declared, rolling onto her belly and getting to her feet. Her legs immediately began burning in protest, but she ignored it.
Surprise grinned. "Okay. Then come and get me!"
And he was off, with Snowy tearing after him.
