Swallow blinked in bewilderment, unable to believe her ears. "I said you could have some," she repeated slowly, as if under the impression that her master hadn't heard her the first time.
"I'm not going to take it," her master said quietly. "I don't ... do that anymore." He swallowed hard, a tellingly mortal gesture for him. It was difficult to tell since his eyes lacked pupils, but Swallow was certain he had shifted his gaze to the other female Kratork in the cave - Seeker.
"But you've got to," she hissed, her breath catching in her throat. She felt like her skin was crawling; she wanted to scream. "Please take it. Please take it."
Seeker moved forward, her pale blue eyes showing concern and confusion. "Why does she want you to do it?"
Swallow turned to look at Seeker so fast her neck audibly cracked. She raised her lip into a silent snarl, hating the other female fiercely, from the tip of her tail to the tiny, useless wings on her head. Stealing the attention of her master all the time, trying to change him into something he wasn't!
"When I do it slowly, as I've done with her," her master said slowly, speaking to Seeker as if Swallow herself wasn't there at all, "When I don't take it all at once, it's very easy to become ... addicted."
Swallow watched Seeker's eyes widen in horrified amazement. "I'm not addicted to anything," Swallow murmured through tightly gritted teeth. God, her skin was on fire ... he couldn't leave her suffering like this, he had to take it ...
Both her master and Seeker ignored her barely audible comment. "How can that be addictive?" Seeker whispered, still looking incredulous.
"Don't you see what's left when enough soul is drained away?" Her master's eyelids slid down, hooding his pale green eyes. "No guilt. No sense of right and wrong. No regret. No love. Just earthly pleasure with no consequence. It's very easy to get addicted to that."
"But I don't understand, why does she want you to do it again and again? Isn't her soul mutilated beyond all feeling by now?"
Swallow growled low, but she had no will left to speak. She could feel her essence twisting around inside her like a screw being driven slowly into her internal organs.
"A peculiar thing about mortal souls ... they're actually a lot like mortal bodies. If left alone, they start to heal ... the feelings come back, more painful than they ever were, having known the feeling of their absence, and it can be unbearable."
Swallow couldn't contain herself anymore; the word 'unbearable' had been too perfect of a description of what she was feeling right now. "TAKE IT!" she screeched at the top of her lungs. "Please, please, please take it!"
Her master, the Sin Gluttony, looked at her with an expression of badly masked desire; she knew he wanted it. She just had to press her advantage until he forgot about his promise to that idiot Seeker.
She tried a trick she had recently learned, stretching her essence just slightly, just enough to tickle it against his. Surely he was hungry, surely he needed to feed on her soul as badly as she needed him to feed on it.
But, to her shock and dismay, she did not feel the metaphorical jaws of his essence closing around her own; instead, she felt her spirit shoved forcefully back into her body. Her master was gazing at her now with a look that was uncannily close to pity, like nothing else she had ever seen on his face. "No, Swallow."
Swallow sobbed and collapsed to the ground, craving her fix, longing for the relief of feeling her master's essence enter her and devour part of her squirming spirit. She was feeling it now: the guilt for all the murdering she had done for her master's pleasure and amusement, the indecency of how she had stuffed herself with food under the spell of Gluttony. "Kill me!" she wailed, tears streaming down her cheeks.
"You're going to heal, Swallow, and the pain will go away." Her master's voice was, for once, unwelcome, for she knew that they were not his words at all, but Seeker's coming from his mouth.
But just then, when she had given up all hope, she heard his voice again, but this time it was not aloud. It rang inside her skull, thought-spoken. "Relax, Swallow. I'll feed tonight. But Seeker can't know. I can't lose her."
Swallow's tightly tensed muscles relaxed just slightly; the prospect of relief was closer now, making the agony more bearable. But she continued to sob and carry on, putting on the show her master wanted, letting the clueless Seeker see a change of heart in the Sin that really hadn't happened at all.
