Personality
Unn is the most adoring creature you'll ever meet. She is extremely friendly and outgoing, and is very quick to trust others. She develops close friendships with almost everyone she meets, but none as close as what she shares with Dalla. Unn and Dalla are practically joined at the hip, having been together since birth, and Unn has nothing but absolute adoration for her human partner. She acts as the mother figure, making it her duty to ensure that Dalla stays healthy, fed, and (her definition of) well-groomed. She is also a shoulder to cry on and a fierce protector; Unn will gladly risk life and limb to ensure that Dalla stays safe, no matter what.
Relationships
She's a best friend, a daughter, and, at times, a mother -- everything a dragon could ever ask for.
Species Info
Undaextraco clarussomnium, commonly referred to as the Bittersweet Daydream, is one of the most peculiar species of dragon. Biologists have come to believe that they are at an evolutionary crossroads between the sky and the water; while descended from land- and air-based dragons, the Daydream has become adapted for life under the ocean's waves.
Their bones are denser than those of most dragons, as they must be able to withstand the pressures of deep ocean ecosystems -- which is one of the Daydream's favorite hunting grounds. To compensate for this increased weight, the Daydream has two very unique organs -- an Aquadis, which separates water swallowed by the dragon into Hydrogen and Oxygen gases, and Aevesica, which stores the Hydrogen gas (the Oxygen gas is absorbed by the bloodstream).
The Hydrogen is used to lighten the dragon enough to take flight and also rise quickly from deep ocean waters; a Daydream will expel the Hydrogen while diving and, when it wishes to rice to the surface, take huge gulps of water to kickstart the reaction in the Aquadis.
Bittersweet Daydreams also posses several retractable fins on their legs and tail. They are used not only for swimming, but also to facilitate fast turns in the air and on land. In addition to very quick swimmers, Daydreams are speedy runners and fliers as well. This is because they lack many of the common defensive and offensive traits found in many other species of dragon. They are ambush hunters, and never, ever take on a fight they aren't positive that they can win; when faced with the option of "flight" or "flight," a Daydream will usually choose the latter.
The Bittersweet Daydream gets its name from its hunting style. Running from a Daydream's neck to its hind legs, as well as tipping its tail and tongue, are circular patches covered in bioluminescent bacteria, which release the energy of sugars (provided by the dragon) as light; what makes this process especially unique in Bittersweet Daydreams is that the reaction inside of the bacteria that produces the light only occurs when catalyzed by electrical impulses from the brain. This allows the dragon to light up part or all of its body at will, which proves very useful for hunting.
A Daydream will hide itself in dark waters (or shadows on land) until prey chances by. It will then light only a small portion of its body (usually its tongue for small prey, tail for bigger creatures, and the large spots on its neck and torso for the biggest) to act as bait. Its victim is mesmerized by the light, and is led -- in a trance-like state -- right into the Daydream's waiting jaws. However, when forced to hunt in broad daylight -- or to hunt prey that isn't attracted to its glowing bait -- the Daydream will use another, very different technique.
Unlike more traditional dragons, the Bittersweet Daydream is unable to breathe fire; instead, they shoot a gob of pressurized mucus and saliva at incredibly high speeds. It is able to kill smaller prey while stunning larger animals. Furthermore, when used in combination with water, it expands into a great, sticky mess that completely immobilizes prey.
When combined with oils secreted from glands on the dragon's haunches, this mucus-saliva mixture is used for grooming. Much akin to birds, they will spread it over their entire bodies using their tongue; this creates a protective layer over their scales which keeps them dry, preventing the growth of molds and fungi. This protective coating also catches dirt and grime in globs, which are rubbed off by rolling around in sand or very fine dirt. A Daydream grooms itself every day, but will only fully replace its slimy coat once every month.
The social behaviors of Bittersweet Daydreams differ by sex. Males are solitary creatures, and are often treated very aggressively by females (who are twice their size) -- and for good reason, because male Daydreams have an unfortunate tendency to eat their young. Females, on the other hand, are extremely social and affectionate. They usually flock in large groups in the wild, and make superb partners for humans. Female Daydreams are loving, motherly creatures who absolutely adore doting on those close to them (human or otherwise), and will do absolutely anything to protect the ones they love.
They are capable of communicating over very long distances, in frequencies both above and below the human range. They tend to have low voices, singing almost like whales, when calm and content, but get very high-pitched (like dolphins) when excited or angry. things.
