Pet Profile
"A yellowish chemical compound that produces fluorescent dyes" | Created 5th October 2013
Xanthene was cold. Very cold. She lay curled up in a snow bed she'd made herself, her fluffy tail wrapped tightly around her, and her nose nuzzled in the fur to hide from the relentless snow drifts. It was one of the colder Arctic winters on record, and even with her Arctic coat, she couldn't escape the bitter wind as it ruffled through her fur. Her wings were damp, and plastered to her back, which didn't help matters. She shuddered, dreading the moment she would have to go out and forage for food. Berries and fruit trees were few and far between - most of the trees had shed their fruit for winter, and bushes were covered in snow. She buried her face further into her tail, and closed her eyes, determined to shut out the weather and get some rest.

As the morning sunlight warmed the tips of her fur, she begrudgingly woke up, eager to make use of the daylight and move on from this place. If she wanted to survive the winter, she'd need to move further south where it was warmer. She shook the snow off her face, stretched out her wings, and sat in the sun, allowing the heat to dry her off. As soon as she felt she was getting too comfortable, she jumped up, ran a few lengths before pushing off into the air. Unlike most of her kind, she loved the feeling of flying, though she couldn't do it for long. While it was difficult in this weather, but she felt excited at the prospect of warmer climates, so while the snowflakes were but a light flurry, she'd use her wings.
All too soon she grew tired and felt the strength leaving her. She plopped back on the snow floor, and felt the cold and wet seep into her fur. She watched as the inks in her tail started to run, causing a kaleidoscope of colour on the white ground. She grinned; this looked much more fun than travelling. With a renewed sense of enthusiasm, she ran here, there, all over the place, painting massive pictures into the snow, the rainbows glinting as the last of the sun hit the ice floor. She sat back and admired her work - yes, she was truly a magnificent artist. And modest to boot. She glanced around for a sign of anyone else to share her joy in her pictures, but it was just her.
No sooner was she done, than the evening clouds rolled in, shutting out the sun, and promising another snow storm. She'd wasted too much time, and there was no way she would be able to travel now. Using her strong claws, she furiously dug into a soft spot in the earth, creating another snowy nook to curl up in for the night. Xanthene climbed in, huddled her tail around her, and shut her eyes, cursing yet another night spent battling the elements. She sighed to herself and fell asleep. She'd try again tomorrow.
