A soldier's primary duty is to follow orders, but when those orders conflict with his own moral ethics, he is left with a potentially life changing decision...
"There were lines of 'em, the buses I mean, each carrying at least 40 able-bodied men to their unattended, anonymous graves. Tombstones only remembered those who had enough of a body left to identify, and most of the men would lose themselves entirely once they exited their carriers. Still, the mood on those buses I'll never forget; it was as though we were on holiday, on break. One would expect that given the situation, being shipped off to war like expendable cargo, there would be a morbid, still air about the seats. Afterall, no man knows another man's time better than his own. We all knew we wouldn't make it back, yet we were laughing and joking around like we didn't. I suspect it was to cover up true anxiety, but it was such a rush at the time that even I can't properly explain it. Fate does strange things to a man. Only he was silent in the midst of our light-hearted antics. Contemplative, I suppose you'd call it, with a face that expressed little but spoke worlds. Our own attitudes seemed fearless, a lie really, only covering up the fact that we were so terrified we could barely hold ourselves upright anymore. But he, he who seemed the most somber; he was the least unsettled of us all. Only he, on a bus load of 40 men, in a line of a hundred or more buses similar to our own, yes... only he had accepted his fate.
Though few words were spoken between the mortal and his immortality in acceptance, we knew the moment we saw him.
He was a true Soldier."
