Taunt
The Horseman of Famine
"And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand. And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and a quart of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine."

"Why so tense, love?"
"Do not call me 'love,' Taunt. You know how much I detest it."
"Oh, come now, love, don't be that way. Tell Taunt what's wrong. She'll make everything better."
The Braenon gritted her teeth audibly, causing the Lirionox standing a few paces behind her to grin. Mari was much too serious sometimes. She would soon learn to lighten up a bit. Taunt would make sure of it.
The Lirionox crossed the gap between them in a few steps, the light grace of her movements making her seem to nearly float. She grasped the Braenon's shoulders lightly, chuckling at the sudden twitch of the woman's body.
"Taunt..." The word was a growl, a warning.
Had it not been for Mari's sitting position, Taunt would never have been able to reach her like this. The other woman was a good head taller than Taunt even without taking her rather large ears into account. A soft breeze blew past, catching the hem of Taunt's dress and causing it to dance about for a moment before falling still. The Lirionox glanced out over the edge of the high roof that Mari had seated herself upon, surveying the city below with an odd mixture of amusement and contempt.
"Shh. Hush now, love. Not another word. You need to relax." Taunt began to massage the shoulders beneath her hands, smirking as they tensed then relaxed beneath her.
"Taunt, I'm warning you." But the warning was half-hearted. Taunt laughed aloud, the sound light and airy like the chiming of small bells, eerie and unnatural against the urban backdrop.
"Now now, love. Why don't you tell Taunt all about what's plaguing your poor little head?"
"Why should I tell you anything?"
"Because I'm the closest thing to a friend you have, Mari. It's not like you're going to confide in Kiln or Legion." Taunt giggled at the idea. "They don't understand anything, and you know it."
Mari sighed, the slump of her shoulders indicating defeat. Taunt released her, swinging effortlessly onto the ledge and seating herself beside the Braenon, a bit too close for comfort. The tiny woman clasped her hands together, leaning into Mari and giving her an innocent, endearing look that was sickeningly alluring.
Mari glanced down at her, sighed irritably before turning her gaze out over the cityscape below. The sun was falling behind tall office buildings opposite them, painting the sky in pale pastels. It would be dark soon, and then the streetlights would begin sprinkling the pathways below with pinpricks of light, tiny dots of futile comfort for those who took advantage of them.
"They're all going to die, you know," Mari stated matter-of-factly, indicating the miniscule movements on the sidewalk below that represented pedestrians. "Why doesn't that bother me?"
"Why should it? They've been digging their own grave for decades."
"Then we have no one."
"You have me."
"I suppose that will have to do for now." A sudden chill breeze sent a shudder through the two. Mari hesitantly wrapped an arm around the smaller woman's shoulders, hugging her to her side. Taunt's head fell instinctively onto Mari's shoulder, a soft sigh escaping her lips as it did so.
"You'll tell no one of this. Understand?"
"Oh, never, love."
"I still despise you."
"Of course, love."
"Don't call me 'love,' Taunt."
"Whatever you say, love."
