I had been waiting so long,standing in the shady overhung pocket of forest. I remember that my heart was pounding and I could feel the thundering sound of it in my ears. If you have ever been so scared that you froze in fear that must be what happened to me. I was afraid to even breathe too loudly for fear "it" would overhear and find my safe haven.
How long I had been there I could not truthfully tell you, the nearest estimate would be based on memories of others.
Then the day I had been dreading finally occured.I was startled awake by the crackling sound of dry branches and then.faintly.voices. I tried to step quietly back, just a little deeper into the shadows..but..oh..please..god..NO..I couldn't move! All I could do was close my eyes, hoping my tears would not cause the small brush below me to move and betray my presence, as I awaited my fate.
It what seemed like years but was only moments the voices were all around me. Nefertiti: "Can't we go back now? We have enough firewood for tonite and I am tired". Faun:" Let's just gather up what is around us here, we won't be able to carry more anyway". Leotie:" Oh,everyone!come look at this bush, it looks like there is a big animal growing from the top of it!" Desi: "You and your imagination, Leotie, keeps getting us sidetracked :(, here..just help me get this branch unstuck". "Owwww..oh..please don't..please..don't hurt me!" the creature screamed. The unexpected scream sent all the children tumbling over each other as they raced back to camp. Skar could tell something horrible had frightened the children but could not make sense of all the high-pitched babbling. He sat them gently down and starting with Faun, attempted to decipher what had taken place. Faun: " We were gathering wood like you asked and all of a sudden something jumped out of the woods and was screaming at us and it ran after us and almost caught us and and I was so scared." Desi: "That is not what happened, I was trying to pull a branch off a bush and I must have accidently hit an ogre or something cause it yelled at us so we ran away." Leotie:" It wasn't in the bush, it was the thing I said looked like a big animal growing out of the bush, and you hurt it Desi." Nefertiti:" I seem to remember a dream I once had about a forest spirit who was frozen in fear and only the happy tears of others could release him from a self imposed purgatory"
Skar pondered the stories he had just been told, knowing that each contained a piece of truth based on the tellers perception. He knew, from experience, that everyone sees the same thing differently.The only thing to do was check it out for himself. The children wouldn't hear of this, they could not allow their beloved Skar to venture alone ever again.
In the forrest, after pondering what had happened, the creature was attempting to pull himself free. "They sounded scared..of me?..how can that be possible" he was mumbling to himself when he heard the voices headed his way again. I hope they come here, he thought, I want to apologize for scaring them.
Just then, the "it" he had been dreading burst through the trees! It's eyes were glowing red and the fangs seemed to reach within inches of his chest! "It" stopped just a breath away, and in a surprisingly gentle voice said " Oh you poor creature, you seem to have become rooted to the forrest floor" The creature, if he wasn't already stopped dead in his tracks would have been. Skar proceeded to direct the children, placing one at each leg, reminding them about how important teamwork is. " You must all hold the creatures weight as I attemp to dig it free" Skar admonished them as he bent to his work. All the creature could manage through his tear choked voice was " I am so sorry for scaring you." Skar gave the creature a reassuring pat on the head as he gnawed through the branch that had attached to the tree above. " umph" "ugh" "ouc" "argh" were the only sounds as the entire weight of the creature fell on the little shoulders.
Free! Free to move, well at least a little,(there was a tremendous amount of stiffness which you can imagine) the creature almost yelled out in joy, but remembered how loud sounds scared the children and contained himself. " You have my eternal gratitude and devotion" the creature told the surrounding group as they lay exhausted on the forrest floor.Skar came and stood by the creatures head " All is not as it was before, we did not have the proper tools, and you stood for so long, I cannot remove the branches wrapped around your legs as they now offer the support that your muscles can no longer do on their own" Skar took a deep breath and went on " I could not free your magnificent rack of horns from the tangled branches, I left you with as much as I was able" A tear was slowly making its way down the creatures nose. " I have left you handicapped, unable to care for yourself, I have ruined your life, all I can offer is a home and a promise....to care for you until the end of days"
The creature looked deeply into Skars eyes " You misunderstand my tears, they are...hapiness
