Determined not to forge any new connections for himself, Kael was quite surprised when he noticed this small creature lurking around his home one day. Whenever he returned, it would be right there, hiding under his front steps. With time it began to follow him around, even within his own house. He decided he couldn't ignore it for any longer when he took a step backwards and was standing on its scarf.
As it muttered angrily and prodded at his ankle with its tiny weapon, he wondered what to call it. Only a few people had left lasting memories in his travels. Removing his foot and lifting it up for inspection, he met its unblinking gaze and they stared at each other for a few silent moments. "Castor." He decided rather abruptly. She was the only one he had ever come to see as a loyal friend. The little creature only blinked; certainly it would never be the same, Kael reasoned, but at times he wished he hadn't left that dark place...

He had been born for them, and yet he was never good enough. He should not exist, he should not even be sane, and yet he defied their expectations. And it was still not enough.
As a child, he never understood why his parents were never seen together. He never understood why hearing two voices instead of one was never to be spoken of. He never understood why they feared to touch him. He hardly knew his half-brothers.
Eventually, he snapped. It was hard enough to juggle two responsibilities, two selves. But the judgement on top of it was simply too much for a young child to bear. He was deemed a failure; even if he did have access to phenomenal magic and sense manipulation, he would never control it. He would always be far too emotional.
Shuffled away out of the public eye, he was kept blind to the terror he had caused. He was said to have died, kept hidden by a few loyal hands of the Order. He wound up in Kaiu's care, broken and careless, along with his brothers. But they were hardly sympathetic to him.
Kaiu did what he could, trying to coax Kael out of his emotional shell. But the boy was far too scared of destroying his world once more and remained stubborn. It took several years of work to help Kael understand who and what he was. Only with intense training could he control the outbursts and physical strain that his power granted him.
Both of them knew he would be sought out eventually. When they came for him, they granted Kaiu his peace, but would not give Kael the option of such a life. It was out of his control, and he should make it as easy for the others as possible.
Though Kaiu advised his charge to remember his teachings and realize his identity, Kael had no such desire. He wanted to understand why he had been created, and he wanted to know his use. And so he left Kaiu and his own life behind, instead opting for his pre-determined path as a weapon.
He did indeed learn about his origins and the existence of his sister, created with better knowledge of his failings. He traded his self for information, for immortality, for power. With time he became the strength they wanted, the captain they groomed, the emotionless tool they were happy to use.
And he told himself he was content with that.

| Kastores says She chuckled softly as she let her head fall against his shoulder. "It does not look shy, though." She mused. "More like it's protecting its property." Castor chuckled again. "It probably just liked you a lot. Which isn't that strange, really." |
| Kastores says She bit her lower lip and turned her gaze to the floor. She was surprised how happy it made her to hear him say that, even after all this time. "I'm glad I'm not the only one who would keep remembering." The only think that kept her from pouncing him was the pal... well, and the fact he probably would turn very awkward again. So she just tightened the grip on his hand and pulled him slightly closer. "Funny how it seems to dislike me, though." She smiled as the looked up again. |
